A feature film tells about one of the heaviest and most tragic moments of liberation war of the Ukrainian people against domination of noble Poland (1648- 1657) – battle under Zbarazhem.
At the head with Bohdan Khmel'nytsky a cossack army took the township of Zbarazh in a dense siege, the Polish gentry under the wire of cruel enemy of Ukraine Yaremy Vishnevetsky appeared in a trap: foods made off, pestilence, illnesses, began; Yarema sent ten of messengers to Polish king with entreaties about a military help, but none of messengers was able to break through a cossack siege. It would seem, soon Zaporozhky cossacks will celebrate final victory, but the unforeseeable happened – an union turned around treason for Khmel'nytsky with Crimean Khan Islam-Gireem: in the middle of bitter fight a horde abandoned the field of battle...
Bohdan Khmel'nytsky found oneself before the heavy choice of – to get a dear price victory over Poland, sinking Ukraine in blood, or to agree to the humiliating and uttery unprofitable terms of peaceful agreement...
Heavy soldiery tolls, treason of the nearest allies, own family tragedy, – only part from those problems which tormented large Hetman of Ukraine then.
A producer rotined that Bohdan Khmel'nytsky is a large war-lord and strategist – at the same time was an ordinary man with failings, weaknesses, fears and problems.
